Laser-applied high performance tribological coatings on light weight materials

To meet the increasing requirements of triboligical systems in e.g. the automotive power train we developed a laser-based coating process wherein the light weight substrate can be coated by laser sintering of a high performance polymer. This coating process reduces the heat influence on the substrate to a minimum so that unwanted effects like loss of hardness can be avoided.


A further advantage of the laser-based coating process is the possibility to apply functional coatings on selected surfaces without influencing the whole substrate. With the here reported process thin coatings down to 2 µm can be generated which are closed and also show a good adhesion to the substrate.


Here, we report on the outstanding tribological behavior of our different coating systems applied by laser sintering. The application leads to a decreased friction coefficient as well as an increasing of wear resistance in comparison to current coating materials used in the automotive power train. By targeted adding of different functional particles to the polymer matrix of the coating material we are able to adjust tribological properties both longterm quasi-statical conditions and selective running-in behavior.
