Surface functionalization of sheet metals for lubricant free deep drawing processes

Relative motion between two surfaces leads to friction forces and wear appearances. To minimize surface contacts between workpiece and tool in deep drawing processes lubricants are applied, which in most cases need to be removed before further processing. Significant production costs originating from supply, application, removal and disposal as well as the negative environmental consequences of using lubricants promote extended research on lubricant free deep drawing processes and tools. Besides research concerning the tool surface, also modifications of the workpiece surface support the overcome the usage of lubricants.

In this work, periodic surface patterns are fabricated by Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP) at high fabrication speeds on semi-finished metal sheets. The shape of the interference pattern is directly transferred to the treated material. The wavelength λ and the laser beam intersection angle θ influence the periodical, spatial variation of intensity maxima and minima in x- and y- direction. The resulting contact area of the tribological system depends on the quantity of peaks and their peak shape. The influence on the friction behaviour of the micro structure alignment on the metal sheets with respect to the bending direction is tested by means of draw bend tests and with a ball-on-disk-tribometer.
