The cyclic deformation and fatigue properties of UFG (ultrafine grained) materials – and of a few nanocrystalline materials - are reviewed. The emphasis is placed on the microstructural effects and how different factors, such as the application of back pressure during ECAP-processing or the introduction of a bimodal grain structure by annealing treatments, affect fatigue life. Simple criteria are defined to characterize the differences in the fatigue behaviour with respect to conventional grain (CG) size materials. The distinction between Wöhler-type (S-N) and Coffin-Manson displays of fatigue lives is emphasized.
